New to the world of hair extensions? Welcome! Here are some basic tips on keeping your hair extensions looking as beautiful as they did when you first stepped out of the salon.
WASHING
Always detangle your hair prior to washing and wash your hair as normal.
For clip-ins, submerge them in a sink filled with lukewarm water mixed with a few pumps of sulfate-free shampoo. Holding by the weft, wash the hair with gentle strokes, add conditioner, and rinse thoroughly. If you'd like, you can even add a hair mask and treat them just as you would your natural hair.
DRYING
Towel dry prior to air drying or blow-drying while avoiding rubbing the hair dry, as the cuticles will roughen up and create tangles.
Air Dry - Brush thoroughly and let the air naturally dry out the hair.
Blow Dry - Add a heat protectant spray and start at the roots. Focusing on the roots ensures the installation is firm and will not slip while styling. Blow-drying in sections is encouraged using a round or paddle brush with the nozzle pointed downward to create a gorgeous smooth finish.
BRUSHING
Use a paddle brush, round bristle brush, or a wide tooth comb.
Start from bottom to top, that way you’re removing each tangle a section at a time, rather than starting from the top and pulling the tangles all the way down. Brushing from the bottom to the top will reduce the pull and strain on the bonds and weft.
TANGLING
If you find yourself in a situation with tangled hair, the best thing to do is get a great detangler and an even better detangling brush. Make sure your hair is dry while brushing because wet hair will stretch and make the tangling so much worse. Brush your hair from bottom to top, removing the knots and tangles from the ends, rather than bringing them down from the roots and causing breakage and damage to the extensions and your natural hair. We advise doing this in small sections to reduce the strain on the hair. To prevent tangling and matting, brush your hair daily, preferably in the morning, after showers, and before bed.
STYLING
With so many great hairstyles you can wear with hair extensions, you shouldn't have to worry about putting heat on them if you have quality human hair. Synthetic hair is quite different. You definitely want to avoid applying heat on plastic. If your extensions are human hair, you can heat-style them, however they should be treated as if it were your natural hair, which means to use heat protectants and putting your styling tools on low-heat settings. Like natural hair, using high temperatures can result in damage over time, and the same applies with hair extensions.
SLEEPING
Clip-in extensions can simply be taken out right before bed. You may want to lay them out or hang them to keep the styling longer.
For other methods, it's best to take some extra steps prior to bedtime. Brushing your hair at night will definitely help reduce tangling and matting. The best way to sleep with extensions is securing them in a loose braid or pulling them into a gentle ponytail using a snag-free hair band. Investing in a silk pillow or satin scarf may be worth your while. Silk pillows reduces friction in the hair and a satin scarf will keep your hair in place overnight. Never sleep with wet hair because you will wake up with a tangled mess.
We hope you follow these tips to keep your extensions healthy and long-lasting!
